Matariki

The Matariki stars

Matariki tells us when a Maori new year is
beginning. It is a time for whanau to harvest
abundant crops and grow abundant plants,
then they store it in the storehouses.
Matariki marks the appearance of the
seven stars commonly known as the pleiades and
it rises in mid-winter. People celebrate
Matariki by fishing, weaving, harvesting
crops, flying kites and narrating legends
about Maori new year. People celebrate
Matariki to remember their ancestors and
the people who died.
